Entwine
Brief: To design a floor lamp made of bamboo with contemporary aesthetics.
Adhering to the brief, we designed a sleek and slender lamp, by stripping the product
of all cosmetic elements.
The form flawlessly captures an often lost moment in the tangling or untangling of a knot. This creates a Mise-en-scène for the viewers to be with this form and allows them to indulge in it at their own pace. Although centered around the formation of a knot, the form is organic, feels free, is dynamic, and demands a space of its own. The focus on the movement of a single line into itself is captivating.
The lamp plays with one's spatial perception. It seems like a two-dimensional projection of a curve, though the curve is one that flows in three dimensions. This is what demands the curiosity of the viewer, and urges one to move around the lamp, to experience it in its entirety.
The Crafting Process
First, the bamboo was split and the desired thickness was achieved by sizing it with a knife. Then, it was sawed to its desired length and width, and the nodes were hacked. The strip was bent with the help of a blow torch.
This product was crafted using the technique of Heat Bending, which includes manipulating the Bamboo strip by applying heat from an open flame. Heat Bending is done manually and very slowly.
This was followed by scraping off the black from the insides, and manually carving out the groove for the led strip using chisels, knives and pliers. The side walls of the product were flattened, and the surface of the whole product was filed, sanded and finished.
Later the inner wall of the product was spray painted matte grey, after masking and applying primer throughout.
The LED strip and diffuser were stuck in the groove, followed by other electrical fittings.
